Online newspaper puts focus on Arabs in American politics

Press Release

01-13-14ADNFrontPageCHICAGO, Jan. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — The Arab Daily News (www.TheArabDailyNews.com) is spotlighting the political election campaigns of American Arabs running for public office from Washington D.C., to Detroit, and Oklahoma City, something that has been missing from mainstream media coverage.

For many years, Arabs who have run for office in local, statewide and national elections received very little attention and are hampered by a lack of community networking, said Arab Daily News publisher Ray Hanania.

A veteran political reporter who covered Chicago City Hall from 1976 until 1992 and now manages a national media consulting company, Urban Strategies Group, Hanania ran for public office in 1992 after leaving the Chicago Sun-Times. Hanania has won a dozen major journalism awards.

“In 1992, there was no real grassroots network to help American Arabs run for political office at the local, statewide or even national level,” said Hanania who narrowly lost a race for the Illinois Legislature in Chicago’s Southwest Suburbs.

“American Arabs have a headlock focus on international politics, and most of the Arab ethnic media only reports on international issues that are beyond our control or influence. I launched the Arab Daily News to put the focus back where it belongs on American Arabs who are seeking to change our status by becoming a part of the system. Arabs must become directly involved in the American news media and politics.”

The Arab Daily News provides original news stories on a growing field of Arabs running for political office including: Andy Shallal who is running for Mayor in Washington D.C.; Ed Shadid who is running for Mayor of Oklahoma City; Sam Rasoul who was elected to the Virginia Legislature last week; and, Rashida Tlaib, the Michigan State Representative running for the State Senate.

The Arab Daily News at www.TheArabDailyNews.com defines itself as “The Newspaper of Record for American Arabs.”

“In order to have an effective national discussion or debate, American Arabs need to have a place where they can get original and complete information that speaks to their interests, ethnicity and needs,” Hanania said.

The Arab Daily News at www.TheArabDailyNews.com publishes originally written news and feature stories about Arabs anywhere in the United States, and includes obituaries, sports, book and entertainment reviews and more.
